MUSICOLOGY: THE ANCIENT GREEK ROOT OF BYZANTINE MUSIC

Farya Faraji (YouTube Channel link) is an Iranian Canadian music theorist who travels the world to analyze different indigenous or ancient music scores and tunes and brings them to life. This quest brought him to Greece. He relegated the bouzouki to a mere Italian/Ionian novelty not worthy of his time (watch "Why Does Greek Music Sound Eastern? - And Why It's a Dumb Question" link). He teaches us about the chromatic and the diatonic mode, microtonality, enharmonics and other interesting musical phenomena you did not even know existed (for an easy explanation watch the video on Oct. 23, 2023 The "Weird" Melodies of Ancient Greek Music). Enjoy! Contemporary Orthodox psalters and Eastern Roman chanters are using the same terminology, but with different definitions.

Oct 10, 2025 Farya Faraji: Byzantine Medieval Music: A Beginner's Introduction feat. Aristoxenus.

Farya Faraji is back in his role of Aristoxenus to talk about medieval Greek music and what we know about it. What I love about this pet peeve of his, is that it so thoroughly destroys the purposely devised lie that there is a schism between the modern, the medieval and the classical Greek traditions.

The reasons why is the subject matter of a chapter in a book I am putting together. But consider this weird paradox in the modern consciousness: Pagan "Greece is the cradle of Western civilization" whereas medieval Greece/Eastern Rome/Byzantium is wholly Eastern and alien.

Suffice here to say that the Greek culture and language has an uninterrupted history of at least 3,5 thousand years, probably even longer. If we replace the made up term 'Byzantine' with Eastern Roma, the reason for the historical and cultural cover up, becomes more apparent.

Immerse yourself in the epic sounds of The Varangian’s Saga – Constantinople, an instrumental collaboration between ‪@faryafaraji‬ and Dimitrios Dallas. Inspired by the grandeur of the Byzantine Empire and the legendary Varangian Guard, this piece blends historical atmosphere with cinematic intensity.
